While I tend to agree that society is overly sensitive about things, I believe the best comedy comes at the expense of the comic, not at the expense of someone else.

study the great ones: redd foxx, moms mabley, george carlin, richard pryor, lenny bruce and lewis black. see how it's done. is there a reason so many of the great comedians are blacks and jews? yes there is.

Easy guide to what works and doesn't work: punching up, calling out power, making wry observations about general things, those all work. Punching down and mocking people with less power than you, that doesn't fly. Unless you're talking shit about your own kids, that's hit-or-miss.
